CHICAGO -- Constellation Brands Beer Division announced a voluntary recall of select Corona Extra 12-packs and 18-packs that may contain small particles of glass. The recall is very limited in scope, according to the company, as potentially affected bottles represent less than one-tenth of 1% of Corona Extra 12-ounce clear bottles in the marketplace.
No related injuries have been reported, according to the company.
This is the second time in two years the company has issued a recall over glass particles in beer bottles; "this recent event is completely separate and distinct, and much more limited in scope," the company said, estimating the new recall affects approximately one in every 5,000 12-ounce clear bottles of Corona Extra, the fifth best-selling beer brand in convenience stores in the United States.
Since 2014, Constellation has "taken a number of steps within our operations to prevent similar events from occurring," the company said. These steps have included acquiring the glass plant, implementing a quality management system, conducting third-party supplier audits and installing inspection equipment on all glass-packaging lines.
"We take the safety of our consumers and the integrity of our beer products very seriously, and we’re committed to doing all we can, working with our suppliers, to ensure this does not happen again," officials said in a statement online.
Company officials said this recall involved defective bottles from a third-party supplier.
