ATLANTA -- Atlanta may join a growing number of Georgia cities asking voters whether to authorize Sunday retail sales of alcohol, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle.
Seven members of the Atlanta City Council are sponsoring an ordinance that would add a Sunday sales referendum to this year’s general election ballot.
If it passes, supermarkets, convenience stores and liquor stores would be allowed to sell beer, wine and distilled spirits on Sundays.
The council is inviting public comment on the proposal during next Tuesday’s council meeting, which begins at 1 p.m. at Atlanta City Hall.
The State General Assembly passed legislation last spring authorizing city councils and county commissions to put the Sunday sales question on their ballots if they wish.
The general election is Tuesday, Nov. 8.
