GetGo Opens First Pa. Location With Beer

Traditional beer distributors in state threatened by convenience retailers' recent moves

ELIZABETH, Pa.  -- Giant Eagle's newest GetGo convenience store in Elizabeth, Pa., celebrates its grand opening June 5. The 24-hour location is the first GetGo in Pennsylvania to offer a selection of craft, domestic and imported beer in store.

Traditional beer distributors are threatened by such moves from GetGo and others, and Mark Tanczos, president of the Malt Beverage Distributors Association, told TRIBLive.com his trade group could challenge Giant Eagle's action. He said the association has a case pending in the state Supreme Court to block plans by Altoona. Pa.-based convenience store retailer Sheetz Inc. from selling beer at a second location (Sheetz sells beer at one c-store in Altoona), in Shippensburg.

"We've contested that on the basis that someone selling liquid fuel is prohibited under state law from selling beer from the same location," Tanczos said. "Somebody like Sheetz or GetGo would have to return their license."

"Customers in other areas of our footprint including Ohio, West Virginia and Maryland have long appreciated the additional convenience of being able to purchase beer at GetGo," said Giant Eagle spokesperson Daniel Donovan in announcing the new location. "We look forward to bringing our made-fresh-to-order food menu to our Elizabeth customers, and are excited to bring a wide variety of domestic, craft and imported beers to our first Pennsylvania GetGo location."

More than 100 domestic, craft and imported beers are available in a walk-in beer cave that is open Monday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m., and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

In addition to the location's beer selection, the Elizabeth GetGo also offers a wide-ranging menu of meal options including Old Fashioned Subs with premium shaved deli meats, 100% Angus burgers, freshly made salads and custom wraps. The menu also includes custom-made breakfast sandwiches and burritos, with toppings such as fried or scrambled eggs, meats and fresh vegetables, as well as healthful options such as egg whites, Canadian bacon or turkey sausage.

The new location also features appetizers such as fries, spicy cheddar jalapeno bites, cheesy mozzarella sticks, beer-battered onion rings and more.

Complementing the foods is a wide variety of hot, iced or frozen made-fresh-to-order drinks. All natural fruit smoothies, lattes, mochas and espressos are joined by both Pepsi and Coca Cola fountain products, f'REAL! milkshakes, iced tea, GetGo brand coffee and more.

The made-to-order-fresh food menu is available on-the-go, at the 36-seat indoor café or at the 15-seat outdoor café.

The adjacent fuel station offers 100% guaranteed high-quality fuel at one of eight outdoor stations. Six regular fuel and two diesel pumps provide an opportunity to save three cents instantly or redeem fuelperks! with a Giant Eagle Advantage Card.

The c-store also offers customers Blue Rhino Propane, surcharge-free ATM, free wifi and free air for vehicle tires, as well as the option to purchase no-contract and prepaid wireless phones and more than 150 retailer gift cards.

Following the June 5 ribbon cutting event, celebration activities will continue throughout the month, highlighted by an in-store appearance by Jason Grilli of the Pittsburgh Pirates on June 16 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Giant Eagle Inc. is one of the nation's largest food retailers and distributors with approximately $9.9 billion in annual sales.
