C-Stores Tackle Super Bowl 50 Ads

Regional chains roll out humor, irony to promote channel's foodservice

YORK, Pa. & ALTOONA, Pa. -- Convenience-store chains Rutter's Farm Stores and Sheetz Inc. both ran regional ads during Sunday's Super Bowl 50.

Rutter's Super Bowl ad aired in the third quarter. The retailer is promoting its "amped up" line of signature foods including its Ultimate Burger, Bada-Bing Shrimp, Jumbo Chicken Wings, Funnel Cake Fries and its new BBQ beef short ribs with Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ sauce with a parody of locker-room pep talks.

"We have received strong local feedback from those that saw it," said Derek Gaskins, Chief Customer Officer for the chain.

York, Pa.-based Rutter’s has 63 convenience stores in Pennsylvania.

Sheetz's Super Bowl ad, created by nine-year agency of record Tattoo Projects, Charlotte, N.C., played with the consumers' assumption that they can't get great food at a gas station. It shows what happens to people who assume.

The commercial was filmed in Los Angeles by Gifted Youth, the commercial production arm of Funny or Die.

“Edgy advertising is part of Sheetz’ DNA, but we never sacrifice clarity of message," said Tammy Dunkley, Sheetz manager of brand communications and advertising.

“This spot is a testament to Sheetz’ brand courage,” said Rudy Banny, Tattoo Projects CEO and creative director.

Altoona, Pa.-based Sheetz operates more than 500 convenience stores in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Ohio and North Carolina.
