LOUISVILLE, Ky. & DALLAS -- In celebration of National Coffee Day on September 29, three leading convenience chains are giving customers free java, and another is offering ongoing discount specials.
Thorntonsis offering a free coffee, cappuccino or hot chocolate to every customer. This CofFREE Day event will take place at all Thorntons store locations from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
"This is a great opportunity for everyone to enjoy a delicious hot beverage and for Thorntons to honor National Coffee Day," said Matt Thornton, president and CEO of Thorntons.
Based in Louisville, Ky., Thorntons operates 162 gasoline and convenience stores, car washes and travel plazas in five states: Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Tennessee.
To celebrate National Coffee Day, 7-Eleven Inc. will give away a free medium coffee at participating stores from 7:00 a.m. EST to 11:00 a.m. PST on September 29. And as part of this "CofFREE Dip-A-Drip" promotion, the company gave Facebook users a chance to vote on and then dip a "drip" (an obnoxious person) into a giant cup of coffee.
On September 28, from 7:00 a.m. EST to 11:00 a.m. PST, users logged on to control a ball launcher to "dip" the person into a giant cup of coffee at Union Station in Washington, D.C. The participant who successfully dipped the drip won a $25 7-Eleven gift card.
The medium coffee giveaway on September 29 is limited to one per customer while supplies last, and does not include iced coffee, the company said.

Dallas-based 7-Eleven operates, franchises or licenses more than 8,800 7-Eleven stores in North America. Globally, there are approximately 42,700 7-Eleven stores in 16 countries.
The nearly 190 c-stores of Buffalo, N.Y.-based Wilson Farms Inc. chain recently acquired by 7-Eleven are also participating in the coffee giveaway.
Also, Cary, N.C.-based The Pantry Inc.'s Kangaroo Express chain is celebrating National Coffee Day by offering guests a way to save on its Bean Street Coffee throughout the fall and winter seasons.
Reusable Bean Street Coffee mugs, or "Roo Mugs," are now available at all Kangaroo Express locations for $1.59. The first coffee fill up is free with the Roo Mug purchase, and all subsequent refills are 99 cents through December 31, 2011.
To take full advantage of the Roo Mug, guests are invited to join the Roo Club by texting "ROOCLUB" to "67777," which will grant them access to exclusive text message deals, including 49-cent Coffee Wednesdays and Free Coffee Fridays.
Based in Cary, N.C., The Pantry operates more than 1,650 stores in 13 states under select banners, including Kangaroo Express, its primary operating banner. The Pantry's Kangaroo Express stores are located in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina and Virginia.
Meanwhile, Winston-Salem, N.C.-based doughnut and coffee chain Krispy Kreme Doughnut Corp. is celebrating National Coffee Day and its new Krispy Kreme Signature Coffee Blends by giving a free 12-oz. cup of House Blend Coffee to U.S. and Canadian customers on September 29.
