Separately, the New Jersey Gasoline Convenience Store Automotive Association (NJGCA) has teamed up with the Fuel Merchants Association of New Jersey (FMANJ) and Q104.3 FM-NY to give gasoline away at a reduced price during the Q104.3 Rock & Roll Morning Show.

The "Give You Gas" promotional event will be hosted by Morning Show radio personalities Jim Kerr and Shelli Sonstein today, August 28th. Motorists will be invited to come to Westview Gulf Service Station in Ridgefield Park, where they can purchase gasoline at $1.04 per gallon from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

"NJGCA and FMANJ hope to use this promotion as an opportunity to reach consumers on issues small-business owners are facing in today's market. Retailers are eager for the public to understand why station owners are being squeezed worse than motorists," said NJGCA Executive Director Sal Risalvato. "The press has consistently reported that Wall Street speculators have gambled by wagering higher the cost of crude oil on world markets. But what has gone unnoticed is how credit-card companies are quietly jacking up the price of gasoline," he said. "I am certain that motorists don't know that as much as 13 cents of every gallon sold is due to the fees that retailers must pay to the credit card companies every time a motorist pays with plastic."

He added, "It is because of the retail credit crisis that many stations have implemented a cash/credit pricing structure. This strategy has essentially prevented credit-card companies from stealing more money from a battered small businesses community and overburdened motorists. Paying with cash has helped consumers avoid the unfair credit card fees added to every gallon of gasoline, while protecting already-slim retailer profits. All small-business owners must band together to educate the public on what's really going on behind the scenes. This is affecting everyone, both consumers and businesses alike. In the end, we need motorists to become familiar with the facts and advocate for policies to lower energy costs."
