Pantry holding cup promotion for N.C. college basketball fans

CARY, N.C.-- The Pantry's Kangaroo Express, through itsBean Street Coffee, is holding a promotion to find out who has the most passionate basketball fans, the University of North Carolina, North Carolina State or Duke University. The chain is letting the coffee cups decide, it said.

Fans visit their local Raleigh-Durham and Chapel Hill Kangaroo Express between November 13, 2010 and April 1, 2011, and look for the special University of North Carolina, North Carolina State and Duke University coffee cups. Each fan picks his or her chosen team's cup and fill it with Bean [image-nocss] Street Coffee. The school with the most number of cups sold wins.

Kangaroo Express will donate $20,000 to the winner's charity of choice. Each of the three charities involved are guaranteed a minimum $5,000 donation.

"The rivalry among UNC, NC State and Duke in the Triangle area is undeniably filled with heated passion unlike no other in the nation," said John Fisher, senior vice president of marketing at The Pantry. "In the first promotion to ever harness this energy into one campaign, Kangaroo Express is bringing together the fans of all three universities in the Battle for Bean Street to enjoy a hot cup of high-quality Bean Street Coffee while making a statement of support for their favorite team and school's charity."

University of North Carolina's charity is the UNC Build-A-Block project, a student-led initiative to build 10 Habitat for Humanity houses for University and UNC Hospital employee families in the 10 months of the 2010-2011 academic school year. The project was formed when Habitat for Humanity of Orange County approached the UNC student chapter of Habitat with the news that a record number of employees had applied for Habitat housing.

North Carolina State's charity is the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund, a charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women's cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause.

Duke University's charity is the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center, one of only 40 centers in the country designed by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as a "comprehensive cancer center" that combines cutting-edge research with compassionate care.

Throughout basketball season, radio andTV commercials featuring university mascots, Rameses, Mr. and Ms. Wuf and the Blue Devil, will share the details of the Battle for Bean Street. Attendees at select basketball games and related events will have the opportunity to sample free Bean Street Coffee, as well.

Available coffees include Bean Street Premium Blend, Bean Street Premium Decaf, Bean Street 100% Colombian, Bean Street Hazelnut and Bean Street Organic Peruvian. All stores offer customization options such as sweeteners and flavor shots of caramel and vanilla. Bean Street Coffee's motto is "We Brew It. You Do It."
