Landshire Recalls Sandwiches

"Fresh from the Deli" American Subs pulled from Circle Ks in three states

BELLEVILLE, Ill. -- Landshire Inc. has recalled its American Sub sandwich, according to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria Monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. No illnesses have been reported to date.

The American Sub sandwiches were distributed in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The product was sold to Circle K convenience store chain exclusively. There were 812 sandwiches produced [image-nocss] on lot number 21882.

The sandwich label identifies it as a "Fresh from the Deli" American Sub. It is a pre-packaged, individually wrapped (clear plastic) with a black tray inside of the package. The sandwich weight is 9.75 ounces (276grams). The UPC code is 9748800540. The sandwiches involved have a lot number of 21882. The lot number is printed in black ink on the side of the package.

As reported in CSP Daily News last week, the recall was the result of a routine sampling taken by the Ohio Department of Agriculture for retail food establishments. Belleville, Ill.-based Landshire has ceased the production and distribution of the product as the company continues its investigation as to the source of the problem, the FDA said.

Meanwhile, an outbreak of listeriosis in Canada that has claimed its 12th victim as Canadian producers widened a two-week-old product recall has been linked to contaminated deli meat from a Maple Leaf Foods Inc. plant in Toronto, said Bloomberg.

Circle K parent company Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc., Laval, Quebec, which operates Mac's c-stores in Canada, pulled several varieties of TakeAwayCafe brand sandwiches from its shelves because of that recall. The U.S. recall is not connected to the recall in Canada; the sandwiches in question do not come from the same suppliers, Couche-Tard spokesperson Isabelle Fafard told CSP Daily News.
