MILFORD, Conn. -- From the beginning of January through the end of March, the Subway sandwich chain has opened more than 400 new locations, accounting for approximated 480,000 square feet of retail space around the world, including space in nontraditional venues. It now has more than 6,700 locations in places such as airports, department stores, hospitals and park and recreational facilities. And it reached a milestone of having units inside 3,500 convenience stores, truckstops and highway rest areas, as well as 250 military bases and 90 grocery stores worldwide.
Bringing the chain 's [image-nocss] total to more than 29,000 locations, more than 7,500 of these locations are in international markets. Also, the chain crossed the 2,300 mark in Canada, opened its 80th restaurant in France and Ireland, and opened its 50 branch in the Netherlands and South Korea. Domestically, the Subway chain also reached the 2,000 store milestone in the state of California, 1,600 in Texas, 700 in North Carolina and 500 in Wisconsin.
Meanwhile, Subway received the 2008 Welcome Mat Award for best sandwich shop from the Good Sam Club, the nation 's largest organization of recreation vehicle owners.
