Quarter Pounder and Egg McMuffin Get Makeovers

Test markets get first taste of new McDonald’s products

OAK BROOK, Ill. -- McDonald’s restaurants are showcasing new takes on its Quarter Pounder in Northern California and testing a lower-calorie version of the Egg McMuffin in Texas and Georgia.

McDonald’s restaurants in the Sacramento, Stockton and Modesto areas of California unveiled three new varieties of the Quarter Pounder with Cheese burger yesterday. The new burgers include toppings in three flavors: Habanero Ranch, Deluxe, and Bacon and Cheese. The Sacramento region is one of the first to bring in this new addition.

“This is an exciting time for McDonald’s in Northern California as we bring in three new burgers that add a thrilling new twist to the popular Quarter Pounder with Cheese,” said Steve Ramirez, a local McDonald’s franchisee.

The new Quarter Pounder burgers will come with the quarter-pound, 100%-beef patty and the following options as toppings:

  • Quarter Pounder Habanero Ranch--Quarter Pounder with white cheddar cheese, hickory-smoked bacon, fresh leaf lettuce, ripe red tomato and habanero ranch sauce
  • Quarter Pounder Deluxe--Quarter Pounder with American cheese, tomato, fresh leaf lettuce, red onion, crinkle-cut pickles, mayo and mustard
  • Quarter Pounder Bacon and Cheese--Quarter Pounder with American cheese, hickory-smoked bacon, red onion, crinkle-cut pickles, ketchup and mustard

Meanwhile in Austin, Texas, and Atlanta, Oak Brook, Ill.-based McDonald’s is testing the Egg White Delight McMuffin, a lower calorie (260 vs. 300), more healthful version of the Egg McMuffin. In September, when it unveiled its new menu boards with calorie info, the chain had announced earlier that it intends to make an egg-white sandwich available nationally in 2013.

The test sandwich is being offered for just $1 this week.

In addition to a “freshly grilled egg white,” the sandwich includes white cheddar cheese plus a round of Canadian bacon on a toasted English muffin with 8 grams of whole grain.
