Eleven c-store chains among leading retailers, five in foodservice 400

WASHINGTON -- Eleven convenience-store retailers, beginning with 7-Eleven, were named to the 2008 Top 100 Retailers list put together by STORES magazine, while five ranked among the Top 400 chain-restaurant brands as determined by Restaurants & Institutions magazine.

The top retailers list was determined based on annual revenue, which is estimated for private or closely held companies, according to the STORES reports.

The c-store chains on the Top 100 Retailers list in order of position and including their 2007 revenues are:

Meanwhile, Restaurants & Institutions' 44th annual ranking of the Top 400 chain-restaurant brands is based on 2007 sales.

Aggregate systemwide sales for this year's 400 largest brands were $292.1 billion, up 5.4% from the previous year, according to the magazine. That's a decent showing, but not as robust as the 6.8% increase posted by last year's Top 400. More telling is this year's 1.9% increase in total foodservice units, which is less than half of last year's 3.9% unit growth, the magazine reports.

C-store chains on the list and their 2007 foodservice sales, include:

22.) 7-Eleven, $2.43 billion
81.) Wawa, $450 million
84.) Circle K (Alimentation Couche-Tard), $412 million
122.) Sheetz, $293 million
125.) Casey's General Store, $290 million
