Sheetz Brings Convenience to Davidson County, N.C.

Kwik Trip opening two Kwik Stars in Charles City, Iowa

ALTOONA, Pa. -- Sheetz, Inc. has opened a new location in Davidson County, N.C., just outside Winston Salem. The new store brings the total store count for Sheetz in North Carolina to 17.

While doors officially opened to customers last week, employees will host a grand opening celebration with a ribbon cutting ceremony on May 8. As part of the festivities, the company will make a donation to the Friedberg Elementary School. The contribution will be used to help support educational and athletic programs at the school.

The new store features cold and toasted subs, a variety of salads, [image-nocss] along with French fries, onion rings, chicken fingers, burgers and more. The store will also feature Sheetz Bros. Coffeez, a full-service espresso and smoothie bar staffed by a trained barista. Customers can order handmade specialty coffee drinks including lattes, cappuccinos and mochas—hot, frozen or iced. Frozen fruit smoothies round out the specialty drink menu. For those who prefer to pour their own, Sheetz offers premium brewed self-serve coffees made from 100% Arabica beans in a variety of flavors such as Breakfast Blend, Serious Dark Roast, 100% Colombian and Hazelnut.

Separately, La Crosse, Wis.-based Kwik Trip Inc. has confirmed that it is building on the site a former Thiesen's home-farm-auto store in Charles City, Iowa, and will open a new Kwik Star gas station and convenience store, the company told The Charles City Press.

"We're in the process of closing on that property right now and should have that store built by the summer of 2009," Hans Zietlow, director of real estate for Kwik Trip, told the newspaper. "The existing building will be torn down and there will be all new redevelopment from the ground up."

It will be the second Kwik Star—Kwik Trip's operating name in the Hawkeye State—in Charles City, said the report. It is building a new facility after purchasing a Star Stop facility there.

Construction crews and Kwik Star personnel are currently remodeling the former Star Stop building, which also housed a combination A&W and Long John Silver's restaurant on one end and Godfather's Pizza on the othe, the report said. A&W and Long John Silver's have been closed, like Star Stop, while Godfather's will be relocating.

"That Kwik Star store should be opening around the end of June, with a July 2 grand opening planned," said Zietlow. "We're doing some major redesign work and adding diesel fuel to the offering so that we will be able to service trucks off of the highway there."

He said Kwik Star plans on using the entire existing facility, which is approximately 7,000 square feet. It will all be convenience store, with no planned restaurant or dining area.

The second Kwik Star store planned for the downtown area will be similar, according to Zietlow, only it will not have diesel, but will have a car wash. "Each store will employ around 20 people," Zietlow said.

Asked by the Charles City Press why the two new stores were being built in so close to each other, Zietlow said at first the company was trying to decide between one location or the other. "We realized that they are really two different demographic areas and not really overlapping markets at all," he told the paper. "The community is large enough to accommodate two stores. You have your highway traffic at the one and regular downtown traffic at the other. Also, having the two stores should help separate out the highway truck traffic from the regular traffic."
