Subway Outlet Update

Sandwich chain continues to open many c-store outlets
MILFORD, Conn. -- During the first half of 2009, the Subway sandwich chain opened 1,014 new locations from January 1 to June 30, including many in convenience stores, gas station and travel centers. That equates to providing about 10,000 job opportunities and filling about 1.2 million square feet of prime commercial real estate worldwide, it said.

Among the openings were 28 locations in Walmart stores and six in Lowe's stores. Subway restaurants have also been opened in numerous colleges, hospitals and airports, including ones in Mexico, Nicaragua and the Czech Republic. [image-nocss] Over the first six months of the year, there were also 68 locations opened in the United Kingdom, 66 in Germany and 64 in Brazil. In all, several development milestones were met, including 22,000 locations in the United States, 2,400 in Canada, 1,300 in the UK, 1,700 in Texas and 900 in Ontario, among others.

In all, with more than 31,000 locations in 90 countries, the brand and its franchisees provide more than about 300,000 jobs opportunities worldwide and are filling about 37.6 million square feet of prime commercial real estate, it said.

All Subway restaurants are individually owned and operated by independent franchisees.

"With one of the lowest startup costs in the industry and a product that fits everyone's tastes and budgets, the Subway chain is still able to buck the current economic trend and provide opportunities for entrepreneurs looking to open and operate their own businesses," said Don Fertman, the brand's director of development.
