More new restaurant openings in c-stores, elsewhere

MILFORD, Conn. -- During the four-month period of August through November 2006, the Subway sandwich chain opened 766 new restaurants in 45 countries around the globe, including 425 locations in 46 U.S. states and eight Canadian provinces. Of those new franchises, 69 were opened inside convenience stores and another 69 opened inside Wal-Mart stores from coast to coast.

Top regions for development during the four month period were the U.K. with 88 new Subway restaurants; Germany with 48 new locations; and Australia with 42.

Domestically, [image-nocss] the chain added 47 restaurants in California, 33 in Ohio and 26 in New York.

In total there are now more than 6,200 Subway restaurants outside of the United States. Milestones reached by the sandwich chain during this time include 700 locations in the U.K., 400 in Germany, 300 in Mexico, 50 in Ireland and the chains first location on the Isle of Man. In North American markets, British Columbia reached 300 locations while the state of Kansas closed the period with 200 shops.

With minimal equipment needs and extremely flexible space requirements, nontraditional Subway locations also number in excess of 6,200. These are restaurants that are typically found in places such as airports, amusement parks, hospitals and grocery stores. Milestones in this area include reaching 1,300 locations inside Wal-Mart stores and 3,400 locations within c-stores, truckstops, travel centers and rest areas. In fact, from the time spanning the beginning of August and the end of November, the Subway chain opened shops at two casinos, two marinas, two movie theatres, a waterpark in England and a combination indoor mountain bike/inline skate arena in Norway.
