MILFORD, Conn. --On July 5, 2007, the Subway restaurant chain opened its 21,000th U.S. site, as seven Subway locations debuted across the country on one day, continuing the chain's growth over 42 years as of yesterday. The first location opened on August 28, 1965.
Customers can order sandwiches and salads at Subway restaurants in Tucker, Ga.; St. Cloud, Minn.; New Port Richey, Fla. (inside the Pasco Community Hospital); Aurora, Ill.; Southaven, Miss.; North Miami Beach, Fla.; and Robbins, N.C.
All seven of these Subway locations [image-nocss] are owned by existing franchisees, who operate anywhere from two to 22 Subway sites. During 2006, 86% of new Subway restaurants in the United States and Canada were opened by multi-unit store owners.
The Milford, Conn.-based Subway chain has unveiled its 6,000th international restaurant, as well as its 6,000th nontraditional site (in locations such as convenience stores, gas stations, truckstops, hospitals and other venues).
