Subway's 2006 Rundown

Chain opened more than 2,000 new locations

MILFORD, Conn.-- The Subway sandwich restaurant chain opened more than 2,000 new locations in 67 countries around the world in 2006, 11 Canadian provinces and in all 50 U.S. states.

During the past 12 months, franchisees opened the doors to 1,075 new Subway sandwich shops in North America and 986 locations in international markets, bringing the total number of open and operating locations to nearly 27,000 in 86 countries.

In 2006, Subway reached a number of significant milestones including the opening of its 6,000th international [image-nocss] location and its first restaurants in the nations of Dominica, St. Lucia and the Isle of Man. Also, Subway crossed the 900 mark in Australia, 700 in the United Kingdom, 50 in Brazil, China and Taiwan, and 300 in Mexico, where it surpassed the number of McDonald's restaurants operating there.

In North America, the Subway chain reached the milestones of 20,000 units in total in the United States: 1,800 in the state of California, 1,500 in Texas, 1,200 in Florida, 1,000 in Ohio, 500 in Quebec, 400 in Alabama, Minnesota and Missouri, 300 in British Columbia and Oklahoma, 200 in Kansas and 100 in Maine.

In total, Subway opened 244 new locations in the UK, 119 in Canada, 117 in Germany, and 116 in Australia. The chain also opened 118 new locations in California, 95 in Texas, 81 in Florida, 77 in Ohio and 76 in state of New York.

And Subway reached the milestone of 6,000 nontraditional locations in areas such as airports, amusement parks, college campuses and grocery stores. There are now more than 3,400 Subway restaurants in convenience stores, truckstops and travel centers around the world.

In 2006 Subway opened locations at 192 c-stores in nine countries, including Canada, Germany, Ireland and the United Arab Emirates. Of those, 22 were affiliated with the Shell brand, 17 with BP, 11 with Pilot and 10 with Mobil.

In December, Milford, Conn.-based Subway opened 254 new locations. Openings at U.S. and Canadian c-stores, truckstops and travel centers included:
