Hy-Vee Mulls Smaller-Store Model

Sites may be as small as 8,000 sq. ft.

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Grocer Hy-Vee Inc. will near convenience-store territory with a new, smaller store planned for Lincoln, Neb. While reports vary, the store could range from as small as 8,000 square feet to as large as 25,000 square feet. Typical Hy-Vee stores can range from 40,000 to 80,000 square feet.

"We think there is a value in developing a smaller store model with a limited assortment of merchandise," Hy-Vee CEO Ric Jurgens told Progressive Grocer. "It was important to us to come up with a format that would be intriguing, practical and successful. We think we've found one."

Lincoln [image-nocss] City Councilman Doug Emery said a Hy-Vee official told him the company is working with a Virginia company to possibly operate small stores at the Lincoln site and at one in a Des Moines, Iowa, neighborhood, according to a report in the Lincoln Journal Star.

Hy-Vee officials did not offer details when questioned by CSP Daily News. A company spokesperson told the Des Moines Register the company is “considering all possibilities” for the Lincoln store.

West Des Moines, Iowa-based Hy-Vee Inc. is an employee-owned corporation operating 223 retail stores in seven Midwest states.
