Madigan Nixes Meth Coffee in Illinois

AG cites deceptive practices, blatant promotion of drug culture

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is demanding that a San Francisco company discontinue the misleading marketing and sale of a packaged coffee product that blatantly glorifies drug culture. In a letter sent earlier this week to Doll God LLC, Madigan demanded that the company immediately cease all marketing and sales of Meth Coffee in Illinois, citing the devastating impact that methamphetamine has had in communities in the state.

In her letter, Madigan said, "Significant resources have been devoted to combating the methamphetamine epidemic in our state, and we [image-nocss] are deeply concerned that your marketing of Meth Coffee will perpetuate the use of this devastating drug."

The product is advertised as an illicit drug, with claims that it has been roasted by a "master druggist," and its website includes images of syringes and addicts. The product's packaging includes a claim that consumers "can actually chew them whole, snort the powder dry, cook it in a lighter and huff…or just forget the caboose and mainline."

Madigan said the product violates the Illinois Food, Drug & Cosmetic Act and the Illinois Consumer Fraud & Deceptive Business Practices Act due to the product's comparison to illicit drugs. She informed Doll God that if the company refuses to discontinue marketing and sales of the product in Illinois, her office will seek injunctive relief and civil penalties available under Illinois law.

This letter is the latest effort in the AG's work to ban the sale of illicit products that promote drug culture. Her office has helped to prevent the sale of the energy drink Cocaine, an energy drink powder called Blow and "Pot-Suckers" marijuana lollipops.

"We cannot allow companies like Doll God to glorify meth use and, as a result, weaken our efforts to educate young people on the hazards of drug use," said Madigan.
