OfficeMax Launches 'C-Store'-Style Concept

Seattle area is test market for Ink Paper Scissors 'mini marts'

NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- OfficeMax Inc. has launched a new store concept that is designed to emulate a convenience store for office supplies and copies. The company has targeted the greater Seattle area for its new "Ink Paper Scissors by OfficeMax" stores. The new stores are located in Mukilteo, Bothell and Tacoma. While most shopping trips to traditional office supply stores are planned rather than spontaneous, the new 1,500 to 2,000-ft. stores are located in areas convenient for small businesses and home office customers so they can stop in while they are on the go.

While 65% [image-nocss] of purchasing professionals participating in the 2009 OfficeMax Procurement Performance &d Best Practices Benchmark Study said enterprise procurement is involved in the strategic sourcing process for office supplies, another 50% say individuals do the actual ordering or buying of office supplies.

"Convenient access to the basic supplies and services that most people need is the name of the game with Ink Paper Scissors," said Ryan Vero, executive vice president and chief merchandizing officer for OfficeMax. "It's about getting in and getting out fast when you need to pick up a ream of paper, get an ink cartridge, make a few copies or pick up some school supplies for the kids."

Inside the new Ink Paper Scissors by OfficeMax stores, customers will find approximately 2,000 of the most popular items in a full-sized OfficeMax store, including ink and toner, paper, pens, pencils, binders, filing supplies, labels, mailing envelopes, shipping supplies and calendar/planners. The product assortment also includes basic technology items such as computer software and flash drives; school supply basics such as glue, erasers and crayons; and seasonal items. The stores also offer self-serve black and white or color copy services.

Naperville, Ill.-based OfficeMax is a leader in both business-to-business and retail office products distribution. Its more than 30,000 associates serve its customers through direct sales, catalogs, e-commerce and more than 1,000 stores.
