The Tower of Walgreens

Upscale site to open across street from old store, which is being renovated to offer fresh food

DEERFIELD, Ill. -- The Walgreen Co. plans to open a new-format, 25,000-square-foot store in the Tribune Tower on Michigan Avenue in Chicago, the Deerfield-based drug store company said. The store is slated to open in summer 2013.

"We will continue to operate the store, which we plan to renovate, across the street," Walgreens spokesperson Robert Elfinger told CSP Daily News. "The existing store across the street has 11,398 square feet and will be renovated to offer more fresh food. That renovation also is slated to be complete summer 2013. Both locations will be designed to complement each other."

The Tribune Tower location will have a bridge pharmacy with the pharmacist at a front desk and a Take Care clinic, among other features, he added.

The company will open the new store in the space vacated by the former Freedom Museum, reported The Chicago Tribune. It will be structured similar to its flagship on State and Randolph Streets in the Loop.

That store, which opened in January, is part of the 111-year-old company's restructuring strategy that aims to revamp the look and feel of its retail outlets by expanding health care services and enhancing cosmetics counters and fresh-food offerings.

Some of the high-end features available at the Loop store include fresh brewed coffee, professional manicures, eyebrow shaping, onsite beauty consultations at its signature LOOK Beauty boutique, a humidor and a fresh juice and sushi bar.

As the nation's largest drugstore chain with fiscal 2011 sales of $72 billion, Deerfield, Ill.-based Walgreen operates approximately 7,850 drugstores in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. It also operates the Duane Reade drug store chain, with more than 250 stores throughout the metropolitan New York region.
