Walgreens Integrating Merchandising, Marketing Teams

Feil departing drug store retailer with elimination of chief marketing officer role

DEERFIELD, Ill. -- The Walgreen Co. is reorganizing its merchandising and marketing leadership teams to better align the "strategic objectives" and to enhance the integration of those teams, according to a report by Drug Store News, citing a statement from the company.

As part of the reorganization, the role of chief marketing officer will be eliminated, and as a result, Kim Feil will be leaving the company effective September 30, said the report.

"Kim helped transform the organization from an advertising-based model to a retail marketing organization, establishing an overall brand strategy and building a talented marketing team. We thank Kim for all of her contributions to marketing's transformation and wish her well in her career as she moves on from Walgreens," Walgreens president of daily living products and solutions Joe Magnacca said in the statement.

Senior merchandising and marketing team will be responsible for enhancing the focus on the customer and integrating Walgreens' approach to health and daily living initiatives across the organization, the report said.

According to Drug Store News, under the new structure, the following people will report directly to Magnacca:

  • Catherine Lindner, vice president of retail marketing, will provide marketing leadership to all retail operations.
  • Deborah Sabo, vice president of marketing services, will lead the creative development and execution for all company marketing campaigns.
  • Mark Cordes, senior director of marketing operations and planning, will continue to be responsible for the Walgreens integrated network and other marketing technologies.
  • Todd Vang, divisional vice president of marketing insights and loyalty, will continue to lead the company's efforts to gain insight into customer preferences and behaviors through extensive research and will report to Graham Atkinson, chief customer experience officer.
  • Cindy Donohoe, vice president of pharmacy healthcare marketing, will continue to lead marketing efforts for pharmacy, health and wellness initiatives;
  • Rachel Bishop, divisional vice president of merchandising strategic planning and analysis, will report to Magnacca.
  • Moe Alkemade, divisional vice president and general manager of private brands, will report to Magnacca.

Feil has nearly 30 years of experience in marketing, sales and strategic planning. Previously, she was senior vice president and chief marketing officer for Sara Lee North America. She joined Sara Lee in 2005 from Kimberly-Clark Corp., where she served as vice president and senior marketing officer. Feil also spent seven years at Information Resources Inc. (IRI) and nine years at Cadbury Schweppes PLC. Her early career included marketing positions at PepsiCo Inc.

Based in Deerfield, Ill., Walgreen is the nation's largest drugstore chain with fiscal 2010 sales of $67 billion. The company operates nearly 7,750 drugstores in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
