BRENTWOOD, Tenn. -- A Northport, Ala., man has filed a class-action lawsuit against Mapco Express Inc., about two months after hackers gained access to the company's credit card payment processing systems.
Brentwood, Tenn.-based MAPCO Express announced on May 6 that it was working with the FBI, computer forensics investigation firms, payment card associations and its customers to investigate the cause of and to identify the source of a security breach by third-party hackers that may have compromised the credit and debit card information of certain MAPCO customers.
The lawsuit filed by an attorney for Ian Yeager claims that the company was negligent by allowing customers' financial information to be compromised and seeks compensation for those affected, the report said.
In a "Security Alert Notification" posted on its website, the company said, "Third-party hackers used malware to access the payment card processing systems in our stores between March 19-25, April 14-15, and April 20-21, 2013. These systems transmit certain card information needed for the approval of transactions. The hackers may have stolen information that could potentially be used to initiate fraudulent credit and debit card transactions."
The complaint names Mapco Express Inc. and owner Delek U.S. Holdings Inc. as defendants, said the report. It does not state whether Yeager was a victim of fraud.
Based in Brentwood, Tenn., MAPCO operates convenience stores in seven states under the MAPCO Express, MAPCO Mart, East Coast, Discount Food Mart, Fast Food & Fuel, Delta Express and Favorite Markets brand names.
