TAYLOR, Mich. -- Atlas Oil Co. and the City of Taylor hosted a grand-opening ceremony to celebrate the completed transition of a once empty field into a new playground. Atlas Oil Co. stepped up to the plate last spring by offering to construct the park across the street from its home office on Ecorse Road.
"It completely brightens the community. The green space looks so much better than the rundown buildings that were located there. The best thing so far is the sound of the children laughing as they play. There is no better sound to put a smile on your face," said Atlas [image-nocss] CEO and owner, Sam Simon.
The grand opening event included speeches from Simon, as well as the mayor of Taylor, Cameron Priebe.
Third-graders from Holland Elementary School were in attendance. Senior citizens from the Taylor Senior Center, Atlas employees and City Council members all participated in the day's events. Lunch was served to the group, and attendees made caramel apples.
When asked why Atlas decided to develop a park, Simon said, "I believe children are our future and many don't have a place to play and enjoy their childhood as they are growing up. We felt that developing a playground would provide some joy to the children in our community."
