Polls show cash machines increase traffic, enhance store image

OAK BROOK, Ill. -- Increased store traffic and an enhanced imagethese are the things that make automated teller machines important to convenience store retailers, according to a series of CSP Daily News polls conducted in September.

The polls, conducted in conjunction with ATM equipment and service provider Cardtronics, Houston, show 60% of respondents believe ATMs are nice to have in stores, while another 22% said they couldn't live without their ATM; 8% said ATMs are not very important, 5% acknowledged they don't have an ATM and 5% said, I'm not sure.[image-nocss]

According to the same-store sample in the 2005 National Association of Convenience Stores' State of the Industry Report, about 94% of c-stores have ATMs. What that remaining 6% is missing out on is an average $5,635 in operating income, according to the report.

When asked on CSP Daily News if an ATM enhances the image of a store, 45% of respondents said yes, 28% said somewhat, 23% said no and 4% said, I'm not sure.

Finally, when asked What is most important to you about the ATM in your store? 54% said increased traffic, and 26% said added profit; 9% said services beyond supplying cash and 3% said the image it conveys. Another 3% said other and 5% said, I'm not sure.

The polls were conducted over three days on CSP Daily News, and the results are based on between 148 and 227 respondents.
