"Pump Perks goes above and beyond other gas discount programs because there is no limit to how much customers can save," said Jimmy Nichols, vice president of merchandising and marketing for bigg's. "With aggressive Pump Perks discounts on thousands of everyday items in our stores and more discounts earned on your total bigg's purchases, it is possible [image-nocss] for bigg's customers to earn deep discounts on fuel. Those discounts could total $1 per gallon, $2 per gallon or even more."
Pump Perks allows customers to save in two ways. First, bigg's shoppers can purchase thousands of specially marked products throughout the store tagged with the Pump Perks logo and receive the per gallon savings shown on the shelf tag. For example, a one-cent Pump Perks discount on 20 gallons has a value of up to 20 cents, a three-cent Pump Perks discount has a value of up to 60 cents and so on.
The second way customers save is by earning Pump Perks fuel discounts based on the total price of their bigg's purchase. Customers can earn a one-cent discount per gallon for every $10 spent at bigg's.
Pump Perks is one of the largest customer savings initiatives in the history of bigg's, the Milford, Ohio-based company said.
Customers can sign up and receive a wallet-sized Pump Perks card and two key tags at Pump Perks kiosks at all bigg's stores. The Perks Card is used at the bigg's register to accumulate the discounts and at participating Sunoco stations to redeem the discounts. Discount redemption instructions are available via prompts at the pump at all participating Sunoco stations.
Separately, Ukrop's Super Markets Inc. said it is slashing by 50% the amount of savings offered by its gasoline loyalty program, reported The Richmond Times Dispatch.
The chain's "fuelperks!" program, which began June 30 when gasoline prices were spiraling past $3 per gallon, offered customers a 10-cent-per-gallon discount at its Uppy's and other area gas stations for every $50 they spent at a Ukrop's store. That reward has been reduced to 5 cents per gallon, Robert S. Ukrop, the chain's president and CEO, wrote in a letter to customers cited by the newspaper.
The program, offered at 30 stations, limits customers to purchasing a maximum of 20 gallons at the discounted price.
"This adjustment coincides with the over 50% reduction in the cost of fuel since we began the program and still allows fuelperks! to remain the best program in the market to save on gas," Ukrop said.
Ukrop said the chain would not commit to extending the fuel-savings program beyond March 28.
The chain said customers have saved more than $5.1 million in gasoline costs since the program was introduced.
