Buc-ee’s Earns World Record Recognition

Chain honored for longest car wash

KATY, Texas -- The Buc-ee’s convenience-store chain earned international recognition this month for the car wash at its newest store. The store in Katy, Texas, was awarded by Guinness World Records for having the longest car wash in the world.

Measuring 255 feet, the car wash is part of the 56,000-square-foot store recently opened in the Houston suburb. It takes 5 minutes for a car to enter at one end of the car wash and exit after being cleaned, according to the San Antonio Express-News.

Officials from Guinness World Records arrived on location at 10 a.m. Nov. 16 to formally recognize the car wash. During the event, a representative handed Buc-ee’s co-founder Arch “Beaver” Aplin a certificate acknowledging the Katy, Texas, location as having the longest car wash in the world.

Aplin told the Express-News that the car wash is capable of cleaning about 1,500 vehicles per day. Cars in the wash pass along 25 separate rolling brushes while being pulled along the conveyer belt. Aplin said the length allows the car wash to use less water for cleaning than a smaller car wash because of the amount of space.

In addition to its record-breaking car wash, the Katy, Texas, Buc-ee’s site includes a sprawling forecourt with 120 gas pumps. Though the location did not open until September due to Hurricane Harvey, the store sheltered first responders during the August storm.

Buc-ee’s also claims to operate the largest convenience store in the world in New Braunfels, Texas. The travel center covers 68,000 square feet and includes 83 toilets.

Lake Jackson, Texas-based Buc-ee’s operates more than 30 locations. It ranked No. 192 in CSP's 2017 Top 202 list of the largest c-store chains in the United States.
