C-Store Community Service Roundup: What Lies Ahead

OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill. -- As some convenience-store retailers and distributors recount past fundraising successes, others are looking toward the future, announcing dates for upcoming charity runs and golf outings.

QuikChek Sub-Making Contest

Here are some examples:

CST Brands. The San Antonio-based parent company of Corner Store has announced dates and venues for its third annual 2016 Corner Store Country Run. Aquafina presents the 2016 run and net proceeds will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters. Runs will be at:

  • June 18 at Angrignon Park in Montreal.
  • July 9 at National Western Complex in Denver.
  • July 30 at Lehigh University Goodman Campus in Lehigh Valley, Pa.
  • Aug. 6 at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, N.Y.
  • Sept. 10 at The Park at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock, Ark.
  • Sept. 24 at Will Rogers Complex in Fort Worth, Texas.
  • Oct. 9 at Dell Diamond in Round Rock, Texas.
  • Oct. 22 at Rawhide Western Town in Phoenix.
  • Oct. 29 at Great Southwest Equestrian Center in Katy, Texas.
  • Nov. 12 at Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio.

The past two years, the run raised a total of $2.6 million for Big Brothers Big Sisters in the U.S. and Canada, as well as local children’s charities in each of the 10 race markets.

QuickChek.QuickChek, Whitehouse Station, N.J., hosted a sub-making contest to raise funds for Hope For the Warriors, a nonprofit organization that supports post-9/11 service members and their families. Volunteer firefighters from the Centereach Fire Department gathered at the store in Lake Grove, N.Y., to see how many six-inch QuickChek Original Italian subs they could make in 10 minutes. The contest raised $2,536, and the company has raised $136,536 for Hope For the Warriors in the past seven months.

Ricker’s. Ricker’s convenience stores across central Indiana raised $30,000 for Salvation Army programs and services during the Christmas season. The Anderson, Ind.-based company collected donations through counter kettles. Ricker’s Saint Joe Road store in Fort Wayne raised the most—$4,963—and the Ricker family itself contributed $3,232.

Rutter’s. The York, Pa.-based convenience-store group has set a date for its 14th annual Children’s Charities Golf Outing. The event will be May 2-3 at Out Door Country Club, York, Pa. More than $135,000 was raised during last year’s event with proceeds donated to children in the communities Rutter’s serves.

VERC Enterprises. The Duxbury, Mass.-based chain presented Hedge Elementary School in Plymouth, Ma., with a check for $500 and Trinity Catholic Academy in Brockton, Ma., with two checks for $500. These grants were made possible through the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance Program. Funded by the ExxonMobil Corp., the program gives local retailers an opportunity to invest in the future of their communities through educational grants.

S. Abraham & Sons (SAS). Employees of SAS’s distribution center in Walker, Mich., donated seven pallets of water, including liters for drinking and gallons for cooking and bathing, to the Flint, Mich., area. This convenience-store distributor, based in Grand Rapids, Mich., also provided the Santa Claus Girls, a nonprofit that has been providing Christmas gifts for children for more than 100 years, with more than 12,000 candy treats in December. And through the company’s 2015 “Jeans for Charity” program, which allows employees to wear blue jeans on Fridays throughout the year, the Ronald McDonald House of Western Michigan and the Humane Society of Kent County each received a check in the amount of $1,677.15.
