Can You Hit the Goose?

Former Yankee Gossage to throw down at NYACS event

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The New York Association of Convenience Stores is offering retailers the chance to step up to the plate against the newest member of baseball 's Hall of Fame, relief pitcher Rich “Goose” Gossage.

The former Yankee flamethrower will be the main attraction at NYACS ' upcoming annual Trade Show and Convention in Syracuse. During the welcome party, he will put on a pitching exhibition, facing a lineup of NYACS hitters.

All NYACS-member retail personnel preregistering for the May 14 welcome party and the May 15 tradeshow before May 1 will be entered in a [image-nocss] random drawing. The winner will join NYACS dignitaries in the line-up that will face Gossage during the exhibition.

Goose Gossage played 21 seasons for nine different teams, spending his best years with the New York Yankees and San Diego Padres, before retiring in 1994. He was one of the earliest manifestations of the dominating closer, with wild facial hair, a gruff demeanor and a blistering fastball.

“Home Run Derby” is the theme of the two-day NYACS Trade Show and Convention, a salute to the game of baseball. The tradeshow exhibits, featuring 125 of the Northeast 's leading c-store suppliers, equipment dealers and service providers, will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 15, at the Oncenter.

That morning, NYACS will offer a store-managers workshop by Ken Knox of Opportunity Knox on ways to increase your average customer purchase. There also will be a panel discussion on alternative fuel challenges and opportunities, as well as a PCATS seminar on how retailers can gain knowledge and efficiency from electronic data exchange with their suppliers.

Fran Duskiewicz, senior executive vice president of Nice N Easy Grocery Shoppes and 2007-08 chairman of the NACS State of the Industry Summit, will deliver the keynote presentation, sharing the latest data on c-store sales, operational expenses, profitability and category performance.

One lucky retail attendee will win the grand prize, a President 's Circle membership to the Baseball Hall of Fame, which among other benefits includes two tickets to this year 's induction ceremony for Gossage in Cooperstown.

NYACS member and non-member c-store owners, operators, franchisees, executives and managers are invited to attend. To step up to the plate, visit www.nyacs.org for details and registration.
