Casey’s Reacts Swiftly to Skimming Threat

Retailer discovers illegal devices on dispensers at gas stations in two states

ANKENY, Iowa -- Reacting swiftly, Casey’s General Stores Inc. has launched a chain-wide investigation of all of its fuel dispensers after it discovered credit-card skimming devices at six of its stores in Nebraska and one of its stores in Iowa.

Casey’s, in a notice posted on its website and issued as a press release, said it is “currently undetermined” whether any credit-card information has been compromised. “No additional devices have been discovered,” it added.

The stores are located at Grand Island, Kearney, Omaha, Waverley, Wood River and York, Neb., and Davenport, Iowa.

As reported in a 21st Century Smoke/CSP Daily News Flash, the convenience-store company immediately removed the devices and notified law enforcement authorities and credit-card companies, and it has instituted additional company-wide pump inspection procedures at all of its approximately 1,900 c-stores in 14 states.

“Through the course of a routine examination of our fuel pumps on Oct. 5, 2015, we discovered that a credit-card skimming device had been placed on one fuel pump at a Casey’s store in Grand Island, Neb.,” Casey’s said. “Between Oct. 5, 2015 and Oct. 10, 2015, we discovered a total of seven additional skimming devices on individual pumps at five other Casey’s locations in Nebraska. On Oct. 21, 2015, we discovered an additional device on one fuel pump in Davenport, Iowa.”

The company said it believes the skimming devices were in place “for no longer than a few days, with some less than 24 hours.”

The devices did not affect transactions in the stores, the company said.

“We are committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment for our customers and will continue to work with federal, state and local authorities in this investigation,” said chairman and CEO Robert J. Myers.

Ankeny, Iowa-based Casey’s is encouraging customers who used credit cards (including debit and other payment cards) at the pump at the Nebraska locations between October 2 and October 10 and the Iowa location between October 15 and October 21 “to remain vigilant and closely monitor their financial accounts and credit reports. Customers should promptly contact their financial institutions if they see any unauthorized activity.”

Casey’s has partnered with ID Experts, a leading credit and identity monitoring provider, to offer the potentially affected customers with a year of free MyIDCare monitoring and protection.
