Chevron Launches Discover Card Promo

Offers card members 5% cashback bonus on purchases at refiner's pumps

SAN RAMON, Calif. -- Chevron has just launched a three-month credit-card promotion with the Discover Card that it said should help leverage the credit-card company's 22 million plus card members into fueling at the refiner's Chevron and Texaco-branded stations, CSP Daily News has learned.

The promotion will run until September 30 and will offer card members a 5% cashback bonus on purchases at the refiner's gasoline pumps. The kickbacks are good for up to $1,500 in fuel or other purchases, Chevron said.

It is also easing the bite transaction fees take out of marketers' Discover card sales. For the duration of the promotion, Chevron will lower its processing fees on the Discover card from 2.25%, plus 11cents,, to 1.85% plus 11 cents.

At the same time as the Discover promotion, Chevron has now kicked off its new Visa rewards program. As of May 29, customers who apply for a new co-branded card can earn a 10 cents-per-gallon fuel credit for reaching $300 in qualifying monthly purchases on things such as groceries, dining and travel. Consumers who spend $1,000 a month qualify for a 20 cents-per-gallon rebate. During the first 60 days of the promotion, an additional 10 cents-per-gallon credit is up for grabs, for a total reward of 30 cents per gallon.

Chevron is also paying retailers $2 for every valid and complete card application that they send in.
