Chevron Says: 'Fuel Your School'

Stations to drive $1 million in donations to help support classroom projects
SAN RAMON, Calif. -- In a promotion that began on September 1 and runs through September 30, Chevron's Fuel Your School will donate up to $1 million to help bring resources and materials to local classrooms. Chevron will donate $1 every time motorists purchase eight gallons of fuel or more at any participating Chevron stations in Alameda and Contra Costa counties in California.

Educators at up to 640 eligible public schools in the counties will have the opportunity to apply for new materials to enhance learning in their classrooms through the Fuel Your School promotion. The Fuel Your School promotion is part of the company's global Energy for Learning Initiative, which partners with local communities, governments and nonprofit groups to expand learning opportunities and support the development of the social and economic vitality of these communities.

"As a Bay Area company, Chevron is committed to supporting and improving our local communities," said Dale Walsh, president of Chevron Americas Products. "The innovation that drives our business depends on education based on science, technology, engineering and math. We are invested in helping to provide students with the resources and tools they need to become future leaders and innovators."

Program organizers encourage eligible public and charter school educators from Alameda and Contra Costa counties to join the program at DonorsChoose.org. (http://www.donorschoose.org) Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)-related classroom projects will be considered for funding as part of the Fuel Your School promotion.

"Our mission at DonorsChoose is to improve public education by empowering every teacher to be a change-maker and enabling any citizen to be a philanthropist," said Charles Best, founder of DonorsChoose.org. "We are pleased that, along with Chevron, we can help support the teachers and students of the participating schools in Alameda and Contra Costa counties in assisting them in getting the resources they need."

Chevron is also introducing the Chevron Classroom Challenge, in which $250,000 in grants will be awarded to 10 different public schools with the most innovative projects from the Fuel Your School promotion. Project requests submitted and entered in the Chevron Classroom Challenge through DonorsChoose.org during the Fuel Your School promotion will be scored by a panel of judges. The most innovative STEM-oriented classroom projects that receive the highest scores will win one of 10 $25,000 grants being awarded.

Founded in 2000, DonorsChoose.org is a nonprofit website where public school teachers describe specific educational projects for their students, and donors can choose the projects they want to support. After completing a project, the donor hears back from the classroom they supported in the form of photographs and student thank-you letters. To date, more than 131,000 public and charter school teachers have used the site to secure funding for $54 million in books, art supplies, technology, and other resources that their students need to learn. Through DonorsChoose.org, individuals from all walks of life have helped 3.3 million students from low-income families.
