CSP Takes Four ASBPE Awards

Peers recognize magazine coverage, design with national, regional honors

OAK BROOK, Ill. -- CSP magazine's editors have been honored again, this time with three national and one regional American Society of Business Press Editors (ASBPE) awards. While the magazine has been honored multiple times in years past, never before has CSP received three national awards from ASBPE in one year.

"CSP continues to set the industry standard for quality, in-depth reporting and writing," said Paul Reuter, president and CEO of CSP Information Group, when the nominations were announced. "I am extremely proud of our editors and am pleased that their hard work has paid off in [image-nocss] this fashion."

The April 2007 cover story "Shifting Weight," a three-part investigative report produced by CSP news director Steve Holtz, senior editor/special projects coordinator Samantha Oller and freelance writer Andrew Magee, received the gold award on the national level in the category of news analysis/investigative reporting. The story, woven together over six weeks and involving more than 40 interviews, examined a change in wholesale pricing of packaged beverages and its possible effect on the future of c-store distribution.

Senior editor/content development coordinator Angel Abcede's November 2007 cover story "Bankrolling U.S. Convenience" received the bronze award on the national level in the category of feature article. The story examined the tide of new money flowing into the c-store channel from global and domestic players.

The 2007 Category Management Handbook, a special issue produced by CSP for the past six years, received the bronze award on the national level in the category of information graphics, for the fifth year in a row. It has been honored with awards every year since its inception, including as a finalist in American Business Media's 2005 Jesse H. Neal Awards.

And Samantha Oller's continuing "Competitive Watch" series received the gold award on the regional level in the category of regular department. "Competitive Watch" examines retailers from outside the industry, such as Starbucks Corp. and Panera Bread, citing best practices that convenience operators may be able to adapt to their own businesses.Gold (National)

"What is most rewarding about the number of ASBPE awards is that they underscore our commitment to our readership in multiple ways—handbooks that furnish critical, strategic data to retailers and suppliers; serious, investigative reporting on issues of critical importance; and issue-oriented profiles that give greater depth and meaning to the news of the day," said Mitch Morrison, group editor of CSP Information Group. "We love writing about and being part of the c-store and retail petroleum industry. We look forward to continue giving our readers the best and most timely information through our online daily reporting, magazines, events and web conferences."

Since 2000, CSP magazine has been honored by various business-press organizations nearly 30 times. All of the awards were for magazines with circulation under 80,000.
