ExxonMobil Lights the Way

Oil company offers donations, retailer-based grants

IRVING, Texas -- Exxon Mobil Corp. said that it will contribute nearly $10.8 million in cash to the United Way in the Houston and Baytown areas following completion of its 2005 employee and retiree campaign.

The funds will assist those benefiting from services provided by the nonprofit and its affiliated agencies. Of that amount, approximately $9.5 million will address needs of the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast, and about $1.3 million will benefit the United Way of Baytown.

The company contributed an additional $4.9 million [image-nocss] through ExxonMobil Volunteer Involvement Program grants to various United Way affiliated agencies, gifts-in-kind donations and corporate-loaned executives and administrative personnel to assist with the work load at already burdened social service agencies. Also included in this amount are the $500,000 cash donation ExxonMobil made to the United Way Katrina Relief Fund and the $500,000 donation to the Houston Chapter of the American Red Cross, a United Way affiliate, to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina who came to the Houston area seeking assistance.

Also, the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance Program recently announced 4,000 $500 grants totaling $2 million to K-12 educational institutions in 43 states and the District of Columbia.

Since 2000, the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance program has contributed more than $11.5 million to local schools through its Exxon and Mobil retailers. The Educational Alliance Program is an opportunity for our branded retailers to support their neighborhood schools, said Mark Shores, U.S. retail sales director for ExxonMobil Fuels Marketing, Fairfax, Va. It is one way we support our retailers' involvement in the communities where we do business.

Educational Alliance grants can be used for a broad range of programs based on the needs of the individual school. This year, many schools are using the grants for special projects that stretch beyond academics such as digital cameras, printers, scholarships, art supplies and playground equipment. Schools also applied for grants to enhance programs such as character education, professional reading and storytelling programs.
