Family Fare, D&W Supermarkets Make 99-Cent Gas Offer

Customers who spent $100 from Jan. 4-6 given deeper discount
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Selected Family Fare and D&W Supermarket stores in Grand Rapids and Holland, Mich., offered gasoline for 99 cents per gallon from January 4 to January 8. Using fuel rewards as a key element of parent company Spartan Stores retail business plan, these supermarkets offered the discount through a coupon to shoppers who spent $100 or more in one of the stores.

From January 4 to January 6, the stores gave qualifying customers a bar-coded receipt when they checked out, which could be scanned at the gas pump for the 99-cent deal. Customers have until [image-nocss] January 8, 2009 to redeem the coupon at one of the 11 Quick Stop fuel centers. Exclusions included cigarettes, alcohol, lottery and pharmacy prescriptions.

D&W and Family Fare offer a year-round fuel reward program. Their standard offer is 20 cents off a gallon up to 20 gallons when spending $100 or more, or 10 cents off per gallon when spending $50 or more per each shopping trip.

Alan Hartline, executive vice president of merchandising, said, "D&W and Family Fare have experienced a very good year, and our complimentary Quick Stop Fuel and Convenience Centers have played an important role in that success by satisfying our customer's desire for both convenience and value. We want to thank our customers for choosing Family Fare and D&W. Family Fare and D&W Supermarkets are playing an increasing role in helping shoppers manage tight budgets and the cost of living today by offering discounts, coupons, generic drug programs, private label selection and meal planning."

Adding Quick Stop Fuel and Convenience Centers to its growing chain of retail supermarkets is a key element of the company's retail business plan. Fuel centers are great traffic-builders for fuel-purchasing customers who are taking advantage of cross-promotions between the stores and the Quick Stop fuel and convenience centers, the company said. Consumers are focusing on value in today's economy, and coupons such as the fuel reward program are meeting that need. Some 30% of Quick Stop fuel customers use our supermarket reward coupons when they fill up their fuel tanks.

On November 2, 2008 D&W Fresh Markets and Family Fare Supermarkets in Grand Rapids and Holland expanded their Fuel Savings program to include 30 D&W Fresh Markets and Family Fare Supermarkets in West Michigan. The program provides gasoline savings at any of the 11 D&W and Family Fare Fuel Centers. Savings vary week to week, depending on what products shoppers purchase. Prior to the expansion of the offer, only those supermarkets with a Quick Stop at their location were involved in the program. An across-the-board 50-cents-per-gallon savings (up to 20 gallons) offer was made to any shopper who spent $100 or more on groceries during the launch week.

"Many of our guests travel to and from work and drive by one of our Quick Stop locations so it only seems right to market to our entire area, and not just through those stores that have Quick Stop adjacent to our supermarkets," said Hartline. Most D&W Fresh Market and Family Fare Supermarket customers live within five miles of a Quick Stop and within 10 miles of one of its supermarkets.
