BERWYN, Pa. -- Expect a week of changing temperature trends across much of the United States for May 11 through 17, according to projections by Planalytics, the Berwyn, Pa.-based business weather intelligence firm.
Overall, warm temperatures are expected on the Eastern Seaboard and Pacific Coast, cooler weather in the Great Lakes and interior., and heavy rain and severe weather in the Plains.
For reference, next week last year, the U.S. was warmer than normal with the least amount of precipitation since 1997. Canada had near-normal temperatures while slightly drier than normal. Mother’s Day last year (May 12, 2013) in the U.S. was cooler and drier than normal, although there was record warmth in the West. Canada had near-normal temperatures, but it was the wettest Mother’s Day since 2005.
Here's what to expect this year:
Expect early-week warmth and humidity in the East. The Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, as well as Eastern Canada should trend considerably warmer than last year. Strongest warmth will be early in the week with moderating conditions late week into the weekend.
Cooler in the Plains, Midwest and Great Lakes. Slight cool trend next week, overall, as another storm system moves through. Seasonal demand should slow.
West Coast warmer, Rockies cooler. Coastal areas of California warm early week and are likely to be warmer than last year. The Pacific Northwest will start the week warmer but should cool down late week and into the weekend. The Rockies and interior West will trend cooler than last year.
Severe weather continues. Thunderstorms on Mother's Day over the Plains move east early in the week, pushing into the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast by mid-week. Severe weather threatens the Central Plains by the weekend.
Mississippi Valley, Great Lakes and Northeast remain wet. Flooding is possible for the Mississippi Valley, while rain impacts much of the East.
