GetGo Offers Grocery Savings

Sobeys, Irving team up in Atlantic Canada on gas discount program
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Giant Eagle Inc. has launched foodperks!, a new loyalty program that enables customers to earn discounts on regular supermarket purchases for pumping gasoline at the retailer's GetGo fuel stations. The program, a complement to the fuelperks! program, is initially being launched in the Columbus market.

Starting Nov. 6, 2008, every 10 gallons of fuel pumped at GetGo locations with the Giant Eagle Advantage Card will earn customers a 1% foodperks! discount off the price of a single trip's purchases inside any Giant Eagle supermarket. foodperks! rewards are [image-nocss] cumulative and, just like fuelperks! rewards, are electronically tracked on the Giant Eagle Advantage Card to maximize customer convenience. There are no limits to the number of rewards that can be earned. There is a maximum discount redemption of $60, or 20%, on a single trip's purchase total of $300. Any foodperks! savings beyond the 20% maximum can be saved for a later supermarket trip, and is automatically tracked via the Giant Eagle Advantage Card.

"foodperks! is the perfect complement to our popular fuelperks! fuel rewards loyalty program, maximizing savings on both groceries and fuel," said Giant Eagle senior vice president of marketing Brett Merrell. "Simply by pumping GetGo fuel into your vehicle, you earn discounts on your purchases at Giant Eagle, even when you are redeeming fuelperks! discounts."

Customers can redeem their foodperks! at the Giant Eagle checkout when they scan their Giant Eagle Advantage Card. Customers may opt to save rewards in order to maximize the discount. Purchase receipts at both GetGo and Giant Eagle locations will show the amount of discounts earned for customer convenience.

Any gallons purchased without hitting the 10 gallon threshold will be carried over to the next purchase. For example, a purchase of 17 gallons of fuel will immediately get a 1% discount and the remaining 7 gallons will apply toward the next discount threshold.

foodperks! discounts will apply to nearly all purchased items, with a few exceptions like government-regulated items, gift card purchases, alcohol and tobacco, state- and federally-funded prescription programs, prescriptions paid via third party co-payments, postage stamps, lottery tickets, money orders, entertainment tickets or other items prohibited by law. Discounts will be calculated after all other reductions such as coupons and other discounts. foodperks! rewards earned expire three months after the end of the month in which a customer earns them.

Pittsburgh-based Giant Eagle has 159 corporate and 61 independently owned and operated supermarkets in addition to 150 fuel and c-stores throughout western Pennsylvania, Ohio, north central West Virginia and Maryland.

Separately, Sobeys and Irving Oil have announced that the gasoline savings program created earlier this year will now be offered throughout New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island, in Atlantic Canada. The program begins November 7 and will last 13 weeks.

A minimum purchase of $50 at a participating Sobeys earns 1 cent off per liter of gasoline at a participating Irving station. Grocery purchases totaling $250 or more at a participating Sobeys earns 9 cents off per liter of Irving gasoline. Savings are good for up to 75 liters per transaction.

"This program is powerful because all you have to do is shop for groceries the way you always do," said Harry Hadiaris, director of Irving's business-to-consumer division. "But if you don't shop at Sobeys, then you won't be able to save. It's as simple as that."

At checkout, consumers will receive a coupon attached to the bottom of the receipt with their savings based on the amount of the purchase.

"Another great feature of the program is that you can combine your savings from multiple visits to Sobeys, and that way you'll save even more," said Hadiaris.

There are 82 Sobeys stores in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island participating in the program, and 270 Irving stations in the gasoline savings network.
