The Mastodon Fair, which is held annually at Jefferson College in Hillsboro, Mo., is the largest art/science fair in the United States. Executive director [image-nocss] Jill Malcom said that the Outstanding Corporation of the Year Award is given to a "corporation each year that has helped far beyond that of a general sponsor."
The now-deceased matriarch of the family, Lillian Mangelsdorf, was a fair supporter since its inception in 1979. Malcom estimates that the Mangelsdorf Family and Home Service Oil have donated approximately $72,000 since that first fair, the report said.
The Mangelsdorf Family and Home Service Oil sponsors 11 Mastodon Fair awards each year. Eight of these awards, the Mangelsdorf Memorial Awards, are given to the teachers of the top four highest scoring students in both art and science. Cash awards of $100, $75, $50 and $25 are given to the art and science teachers or the parent if the student is home schooled. Other Mangelsdorf Family and Home Service Oil sponsored awards are the Flying Eagle for Outstanding Individual Effort and the Flying Eagle for Outstanding Group Effort. Both of these awards are given in the form of a trophy.
The final award is for Best in Show. Best in Show is awarded is presented to only one student out of more than 3,000 participants.
The 2010 recipient of Best in Show is Paris Tomlinson, 9, of Hillsboro, who will be a fourth grader at Grandview Elementary, said the report.
The Best in Show recipient wins a trophy, photo album and a limousine ride to a St. Louis attraction plus up to $75 for food for the day.
