LA CROSSE, Wis. -- Kwik Trip Inc. has quietly installed as many of 70 free electric vehicle charge stations (outlets on poles with signs) in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa, reported Ben Nelson, a green car advocate, on his blog 300mpg.org.
Each unit is a 120-volt outlet on a pole with a sign reading, "Electric Vehicle Charge Station."
"It's not part of any fancy 'brand-name' charging station, such as ChargePoint, which has a mapping system, iPhone Apps or other sophisticated mapping/advertising system," said Nelson, but he said he believes that "too many high-tech [image-nocss] charging network startups take big public dollars yet keep access locked up in proprietary networks."
Kwik Trip told Nelson that the chain is planning to upgrade to "something more powerful in the near future."
La Crosse, Wis.-based Kwik Trip has thousands of employees serving customers in more than 400 Kwik Trip, Kwik Star, Hearty Platter and Tobacco Outlet Plus stores throughout Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa.
