Kwik Trip Raising Funds for Next Honor Flight

Pilgrimage to D.C. war memorials scheduled for May 14
LA CROSSE, Wis. -- Freedom Honor Flight recently announced that the organization's next flight to bring veterans to Washington, D.C., to view the nation's war memorials will be held on May 14, 2011. Through the support of Kwik Trip Inc., this flight will be the second in as many years to be named a "Kwik Trip Freedom Honor Flight." Veterans for the May 14 flight will be selected from applications already on file. Those veterans and guardians assigned to the May flight will be notified sometime in March.

Kwik Trip is involved in the support of Honor Flight hubs, including [image-nocss] the La Crosse, Wis.-based Freedom Honor Flight, throughout its service area.

The retailer, also based in La Crosse, donated $50,000 to the group. And on February 18, Kwik Trip, Kwik Star and Hearty Platter stores began their second annual Freedom Honor Flight fundraising effort. Customers can make donations that allow them to sign and post certificates in the store. A two-week, in-store fundraising effort in 2010 raised more than $205,000, which was distributed among the Honor Flight hubs in the region. This year's goal is $225,000.

Meanwhile, Kwik Trip and Leinenkugel's are teaming up with Honor Flight Programs in the Midwest. From now until March 24, Leinenkugel's will donate 25 cents for every Leinenkugel's six-pack sold at local Kwik Trip store

With two flights planned for 2011, Freedom Honor Flight expects to be able to serve all the World War II veterans currently on the waiting list, it said. Officials estimated that in the 22 counties the hub serves, there remain more than 6,000 World War II veterans who have not yet participated in an Honor Flight. The group is planning an outreach campaign to encourage those remaining World War II veterans who are interested to apply for future flights.

This year, Kwik Trip will have applications available in its stores.

Freedom Honor Flight is the first Wisconsin affiliate of the national network of Honor Flight organizations. The hub serves 22 counties in western Wisconsin, southeast Minnesota and northern Iowa. The group's mission is to organize and fly groups of veterans to Washington D.C. to visit the war memorials that stand in their honor. The group receives no government funding and depends on donations, which are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.
