MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Partnering with Little General Stores Inc., Remember The Miners--a nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring coal miners and their legacy through public awareness campaigns and charitable contributions--has raised visibility and scholarship funds through the sale of Remember The Miners Awareness Magnets.Shaped like the helmet of a coal miner, these magnets were sold across West Virginia to display appreciation for coal mining families in addition to supporting The Scholars Program.
As part of Little General's partnership with Remember The Miners, [image-nocss] the West Virginia convenience store chain also hosted a Scholars Program Awareness Concert Series using local talent including Reagan Boggs, Matt Jones and Neal Spears.
The organization has announced its selection of finalists for The Scholars Program. Recipients of The Remember The Miners Scholars Program are Adam Bryant of the University of Kentucky, Charlie Chase III of West Virginia University, Amanda Copley of Bluefied State University, Korri Hall, and Bradley Farley.
Remember The Miners and the West Virginia Coal Foundation created the Scholars Program to support families of the West Virginia mining community. Awardees of the scholarship are miners, dependents of miners or students pursuing higher education in the mining industry. Applicants submitted essays about the importance of coal and its future in America.
Remember The Miners also partnered with regional brewer D. G. Yuengling & Sons to raise money for The Scholars Program. As an ongoing charitable partnership, Yuengling will be donating a portion of sales to Remember The Miners, and will also be hosting its annual Riders for Miners event to raise money for The Scholars Program.
Scholars Program recipients will be invited to attend the Inaugural Bob Huggins Fish Fry in Morgantown, W.Va., where they will be formally announced. Proceeds from this event will benefit further Scholars Program funds.
Scholarships will be awarded twice-annually. This is the first time Remember The Miners has awarded Scholars Program recipients, though future Scholars Program application periods have been scheduled for upcoming semesters.
A dozen miners died in a mining accident in the small town of Tallmansville, W.Va., in early 2006, and the state's c-stores let a hand to aid the community. (Click here for previous CSP Daily News coverage.)
Beckley, W.Va.-based Little General Store, owned by Cory Beasley and Greg Darby, operates 85 convenience stores, with 83 stores in West Virginia and two stores in Virginia. The company is a franchisee for 28 Subways, 15 Godfather's Pizza's, 11 Sam's Hot Dog Stands, seven Burger King's, six Arby's, four Taco Bell's, three Krispy Krunchy Chicken Stands, two Steak Escape's and the 79er Restaurant in Burnsville, W.Va.
