Rutter's supports environmental sustainability project
YORK, Pa. -- Rutter's Farm Stores has donated $25,000 to Junior Achievement of South Central Pennsylvania (JA), in support of a new "Go Green" initiative which will address the topic of environmental sustainability through the Junior Achievement program. This is the first recycling-focused activity to be added to a JA program anywhere in the United States. As a supplement to the "Our Region" program for fourth-grade students, "The Rutter's Presents 'Go Green' " lesson [image-nocss] will feature an interactive learning activity that will teach the students how they can help the environment every day. By outlining ways for students to reduce, reuse and recycle through a fun and interactive exercise, Rutter's and JA of South Central Pennsylvania expect that these "green tips" will become routine actions for the students after they leave the classroom.

"Being 'green' is just a fact of life in today's business world," said Scott Hartman, president of Rutter's Farm Stores. "It's an important part of the way Rutter's operates, and we're thrilled to help bring about this environmental project as part of the JA in-class experience."

Tom Russell, president of JA of South Central Pennsylvania, said, "[JA] is proud to partner with Rutter's on the Go Green initiative. Reinforcing the importance of being environmentally conscious is timely and relevant, and this supplemental activity coincides perfectly with the existing JA curriculum."

The Rutter's Presents Go Green supplement is currently in the final planning stages. Production and implementation of the lesson will be carried out in the spring.

Family-owned and third-generation-managed, the Rutter's companies comprise Rutter's Farm Stores (more than 50 locations in Pennsylvania), Rutter's Dairy and M&G Realty.

JA of South Central Pennsylvania, including JA BizTown & JA Finance Park, offers financial literacy, work-readiness and entrepreneurship programs to area schools and organizations throughout Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Perry and York Counties. The programs, which are correlated to Pennsylvania academic standards, are taught by community volunteers and presented in-class during the regular school day to students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. This year, JA of South Central Pennsylvania will reach 38,000 students, inspiring and preparing them to succeed in the global economy.
