Retailer picks Sheetzadelic Store of the Year

MT. JACKSON, Va. -- From the more than 300 Sheetz stores across six states, the Mt. Jackson, Va., Travel Center was named Sheetz 2005 Store of the Year. The title recognizes the store that best meets the standards for excellence set by the family owned and operated convenience store chain.

We use more than sales and profitability to determine Store of the Year, said Travis Sheetz, vice president of regional operations. We also look at store morale and customer service practices. Store of the Year is the highest honor a Sheetz manager can achieve.

Craig Dively, manager of the Mt. Jackson Travel Center in Shenandoah County, is a 15-year Sheetz veteran of the company. His store's average secret shopper score topped 94% this year, which the company said is a significant achievement for a location of more than 10,000 sq. ft.

He also praised his team. I have a dedicated group of 43 hard workers at the travel center28 of whom celebrated three-year-plus anniversaries with the company this year, said Dively. My employees take great pride in working for Sheetz and it really comes through to our customers. I'm really proud of what we accomplishedit's a great honor to share with my team.

Based on the effort of the entire store team, top stores must prove themselves in four areas of operation including: store environment for employees and customers; the growth of the store over previous years; management of controllables such as inventory levels and employee turnover; and most importantly, customer service, measured against the company standard known as Total Customer Focus, with scores determined by Sheetz secret shoppers who shop and rate each of the Sheetz stores a minimum of four times each quarter.

Other stores honored at the event included the Ritner Highway Sheetz store in Carlisle, Pa., managed by Susan Kuhn, which was first runnerup, and the Sheetz store in Franklin, Pa., managed by Kathy Porter, which was second runnerup.

Altoona, Pa.-based Sheetz Inc., with more than $2.8 billion in revenue and more than 10,000 employees, operates more than 300 convenience locations throughout Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina. Sheetz provides a menu of made-to-order subs, sandwiches and salads, which are ordered through unique touchscreen order-point terminals.
