YORK, Pa. -- The Rutter's companies has announced a new round of 2010 charitable contributions totaling $453,000 to nonprofit organizations throughout its market region. Including the latest commitments, Rutter's charitable contributions dating to 2003 now surpass $2.65 million.
"Rutter's has been fortunate to continue its growth despite the challenging economic times," said Scott Hartman, president and CEO of Rutter's Farm Stores. "But we also have a responsibility to give back to the communities that make our success possible in the first place. We're honored to support [image-nocss] these worthy organizations and causes."
The 2010 donation recipients include Crispus Attucks Association, Junior Achievement of South Central Pennsylvania; the Bobcat Foundation at Northeastern School District; Leg Up Farm in York County; YMCA of York and York County; Children's Home of York; York County Library System; Waynesboro Area Business & Community Foundation; Inspiring Hope Inc.; and the Jewish Community Center in York.
Recently, the Rutter's companies donated $50,000 to Leg Up Farm, a nonprofit therapy center servicing more than 300 special needs children in a three-county area. Located on 18 acres in East Manchester Township in Pennsylvania, Leg Up Farm opened its doors in April.
The first phase of construction comprises a 16,500-square-foot building to accommodate therapeutic and educational services.
Rutter's donation is earmarked for an interactive therapy space called Matthew's Town. The sensory-rich environment will resemble a small town, complete with storefronts, sidewalks, grassy area, two-story barn and attached silo. A Rutter's storefront will be a centerpiece of the town.
The project's second phasefeaturing an indoor riding arena and barnis expected to be completed by mid-October, the company said.
Leg Up Farm is the vision of Louie Castriota Jr. and his wife, Laurie, whose daughter, Brooke, was diagnosed at age 1 with mitochondrial disease, a metabolic disorder that causes cognitive and motor function delays.
Family-owned and third-generation managed, the Rutter's companies include Rutter's Farm Stores, Rutter's Dairy and M&G Realty, a real-estate development company. Rutter's Farm Stores operates 55 convenience stores in York, Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin and Lancaster counties in Pennsylvania.
