Pumping It Old School

"Retro" stations to feature full service, oil-checking, coffee, more
KOSCIUSKO, Miss. -- Two independent retailers are returning to the old ways of doing business. A former BP service station located just off of the historic downtown Kosciusko, Miss., square received an extreme makeover as new owners Mark and Kelly Clay recently transformed the dilapidated location into a rejuvenated retro "pump and go," according to The Kosciusko Star Herald. Separately, a Minneapolis CITGO station has closed and is undergoing renovations to become an "old-school" Metro Petro, owners Clay and Mia Lambert told The Bridge.

The Town Pump in Kosciusko [image-nocss] will feature two gasoline islands, one self-service and the other full service. Along with complimentary windshield cleaning and tire pressure, oil and windshield washer fluid checks, complimentary coffee or iced tea will be available.

Mark Clay, 33, a former Ford employee who used to work in research and engineering and Kelly Clay, 25, a former mortuary science major and waitress, were married on June 8, 2007. "Southern summers and warm hospitality" drew the couple to Kosciusko to try their convenience venture, said the report. "Wesaw the potential; it's just a perfect location, and we couldn't believe it was shut down at this busy four-way stop, right on the way to the square," Kelly told the newspaper.

Kirk Dickerson owned the property until he sold it to the Clays after they secured a business loan and closed the deal this past March. Work on the property began over Easter. "Old nostalgic Kosciusko" will be Town Pump's theme, according to Mark, who designed the store layout himself, catering to everyone who would stop in, "We've never lived where there's full service [gas stations] before; we love thatthe feel and the relationship with peoplewe don't ever want to get that corporate feel," said Kelly.

"We're going make it a place to drink coffee and read the local paper," said Mark, "And to hang out, that's what we love about the south, how relaxed it is and we really are trying to embrace that," Kelly added.

The store will feature Various coffees, the report said. "There's Hawaiian blends, and we're going to have iced coffee and cappuccino," she said.

Meanwhile, in Minnesota, the Lamberts' Metro Petro will grow to 3,200 square feet in order to accommodate a grocery store, as well as an 88-foot soft-cloth tunnel conveyor car wash. There will be a full-service gas station with the added perks of free gasoline-pumping and oil-checking services.

According to Lambert, the "new and improved" facility will be the type of station business he has envisioned since his ownership in 2002. "We're going back to old-school," he told the paper.

Lambert also said he has received widespread neighborhood support for the project, which is expected to open in mid-November, said the report.
