Putting for Playgrounds

Rutter's charity golf outing raises $97,000 for community projects

YORK, Pa. -- Rutter's 8th annual charity golf outing raised $100,000, which will help two York County nonprofit organizations to build distinctive playgrounds. Rutter's has pledged $25,000 to Inspiring H.O.P.E. (Helping Others Play Equally), which is building York County's only barrier-free playground in Manchester Township.

It will give children who can't walk, see or hear a place to play alongside children who can. Nearly 5,000 elementary- and middle school-aged children in York County have sensory, physical or mental disabilities.

And Rutter's has pledged $50,000 [image-nocss] to the York Jewish Community Center, which plans to celebrate its 100th anniversary by building a "natural playscape" playground in York Township. It is designed to appeal to all five senses, incorporates loose parts or unstructured props for play and exploration, and complements children's innate interest in the natural environment.

The remaining funds will be distributed to designated children-focused charities in the six counties where Rutter's operates, the company said.

"Children should have safe places in which to play, exercise, explore and just have fun," said Scott Hartman, president and CEO of Rutter's Farm Stores. "Each of these projects achieves those aims and then some. We're happy to be involved and grateful for the generosity of our supplier community."

The golf outing drew more than 270 people, most of them representing Rutter's suppliers. The May 3 to 4 event was held at Regents' Glen Golf Course near York.

Based in York, Pa., the family-owned, third-generation-managed Rutter's companies include Rutter's Farm Stores, which operates 55 convenience stores in York, Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin and Lancaster counties in Pennsylvania; Rutter's Dairy, which serves Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey; and M&G Realty, a real-estate development company.
