Shell station owner Couch makes successful lawn-chair balloon flight
BEND, Ore. -- Using a BB gun to help him return to Earth, 48-year-old gas station owner Kent Couch realized his boyhood dream on July 5 of flying a lawn chair rigged with helium-filled party balloons more than 200 miles across the Oregon high desert to land in a farm field in Idaho.

According to an Associated Press report, Couch created a sensation in the tiny farming community of Cambridge, Idaho, where he touched down in an empty pasture and was greeted by dozens of people.

Local plumber Mark Hetz told AP that his wife, who works at a local market, called him and said, "[image-nocss] The balloon guy in the lawn chair just flew by the market and if you look out the door, you can see him."

Hetz said Couch shot some of the balloons with his BB gun to lower himself to the ground and that people were raced toward the landing with cameras.

Couch had covered about 235 miles in about nine hours after lifting off with the dawn from his Shell Stop & Go Mini Mart in Bend in Central Oregon, riding in a green lawn chair rigged with a rainbow array of more than 150 giant balloons.

It was his third attempt.Click here for CSP Daily News coverage of one of those attempts.
