YORK, Pa. -- The Rutter's companies recently presented two checks totaling $10,000 to The Four Diamonds Fund.
Scott Hartman, president of Rutter's Farm Stores, recently completed a one-year term as chairman of the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS). To honor his wife, Cathy, for serving as the chairman's wife, the association presented her with $5,000 to give to the charity of her choice. She selected The Four Diamonds Fund, which provides support to families whose children are being treated for cancer at Penn State Children's Hospital [image-nocss] in Hershey, Pa.
Rutter's matched the association's contribution in memory of Karen Gentzler, a 25-year Rutter's employee who died from cancer on August 15.
Karen was a wonderful person who was dedicated to her family and to Rutter's and our customers, Hartman said. She battled her cancer bravely while also lending support to her nephew, Ryan Rohrbaugh, who lost his own battle with cancer in June. It is fitting that we present these contributions to The Four Diamonds Fun in her name.
A native of Gettysburg, Pa., Gentzler worked at the Rutter's in West Manchester Township, where she was named Team Member of the Year in 2000.
The combined Rutter's and NACS donations will support three educational programs offered by The Four Diamonds Fund:
Childhood Cancer Survivor's Day, which was created to celebrate and education childhood cancer survivors (ages 18-30) by focusing on long-term young-cancer survivorship issues. Siblings Unique Day, which helps the siblings of pediatric cancer patients to understand more about the disease and have a better sense of what their brother or sister goes through during treatment. Pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship program, which supports Penn State Children's Hospital's mission of training new leaders in clinical medicine and research.York, Pa.-based Rutter's companies include Rutter's Farm Stores, Rutter's Dairy and M&G Realty, a real-estate holding company.
