From Service Bays to eBay

Historic Des Moines station put up for online auction; website lists other properties
DES MOINES, Iowa -- An historic 1933 gasoline station is for sale in Des Moines, Iowa, for the bargain-basement price of $26,000. There is one catch: You'll have to relocate the building to a different location. The city's Historic East Village Inc. purchased the service station and moved it to a nearby parking lot. It now has put the building up for sale on eBay.

The listing went up Friday, and bids will be taken until June 28, according to a report in The Des Moines Register. As of yesterday afternoon, there were no bids on the building.

East Village Inc. [image-nocss] acquired the station for free from businessman Jim Cownie earlier this year. The 1,000-square-foot property with two auto-service bays was built by Continental Oil Co. as a training station for dealers. Cownie wants to eventually redevelop the site it was on.

The East Village group raised $40,000 to move the building, including $10,000 from Cownie, but the move cost $60,000, and the group is now trying to recoup some of the cost by selling the building.

If a local buyer makes the winning bid, the East Village group will contribute $5,000 to moving the building from the lot at East Third and Walnut streets where it now sits, Sarah Oltrogge of Historic East Village Inc., told the newspaper. Click here for more information about the building.

The Des Moines service station isn't the only petroleum retailing opportunity available on eBay. A gas station/restaurant/motel/bar in Danville, Wash., also is listed for sale for just under $2 million. The 5-acre lot and 20,000-square-foot business complex was posted on eBay April 24 for a 90-day listing.Click here to see more about this site.

Other listings include: A 2,700-square-foot convenience store in Fort Myers, Fla., listed at $390,000.A 2,500-square-foot c-store in Pelham, Ga., for $275,000.A 2,256-square-foot gas station and garage in Ruther Glen, Va., for $799,000.
