HARRISBURG, Pa. -- In recognition of its workplace practices promoting employee well-being and organizational performance, convenience-store retailer Sheetz Inc. was presented with the Pennsylvania Psychological Association's (PPA) 2014 Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award at a ceremony in Harrisburg, PA, on June 19, 2014.

Sheetz focuses on treating the customer and the employee right, according to PPA, constantly going above and beyond to make sure that each and every employee is respected and included in the growth of the organization.

Employees at Sheetz have communication pipelines through which they can express their concerns, suggestions and comments all the way to the top of the organization. These include town-hall meetings, employee feedback sessions, and employee online forum and executive store visits. In addition, employee growth and development is vital to the success of Sheetz. The company provides tuition reimbursement to employees and scholarships to employees and their families. It has also partnered with nine colleges and universities to provide discounted tuition to its employees to obtain higher education degrees.

Sheetz also places high importance on recognizing employees on a job well-done. In 2012, Sheetz developed a Shwellness Center that offers a variety of health and wellness programs to its employees, including cardiovascular and exercise equipment operated by a licensed trainer, group exercise and yoga classes, and an urgent-health-care center (with medical staff) available to all employees and their family members offered at no charge and educational seminars. Lastly, Sheetz offers employees a variety of benefits, including flexible work schedules, bonuses based on performance, eldercare support, paid-leave options, childcare support and life management services.

"The business world is in the midst of a sea of change," said David Mulligan, Psy.D., chair of PPA's Psychologically Healthy Workplace Program. "Successful organizations such as Sheetz Inc. have learned that high performance and sustainable results require attention to the relationships among employee, organization, customer and community."

Based in Altoona, Pa., Sheetz Inc. owns and operates more than 460 convenience stores in six states.

PPA promotes the science and practice of psychology by supporting psychologists to meet the evolving needs of the public.
