ST. LOUIS -- Two metropolitan St. Louis Shop 'n Save grocery stores have opened gas stations, and the chain and is considering opening more, reported The Belleville News-Democrat. A store located in Wood River, Ill., opened a Shop 'n Save Fuel Express station on the property in mid-December, and a second opened Friday in Alton, Ill.
Shop 'n Save spokesperson Rebecca Herbst told the newspaper that the two stores are the first in the St. Louis area to add gas stations, and more could be coming. She said the new stations will sell gasoline at prices that will be "competitive," but in line [image-nocss] with other stations.
"It's just a great convenience to be able to go the grocery store and get gas for the week, also," she added.
With the opening of the second station, Shop 'n Save is also offering a new Fuel Rewards program, said the report. The program gives customers cents-off discounts on fuel based on groceries purchased in a single trip. Shoppers will receive the discount coupon with their grocery receipt.
Customers who spend $100 or more on food at Shop 'n Save can save 9 cents per gallon of fuel for up to 20 gallons. Those who spend between $50 and $99.99 can save 6 cents a gallon, and those buying $10 to $49.99 can save 3 cents per gallon.
